Moon sighting is the practice of observing the new crescent moon (the hilal) to mark the start of each month in the Islamic Hijri calendar. A new month begins once the young crescent first becomes visible shortly after sunset following the astronomical new moon.

When is the next moon sighting for Ramadan and Eid?
The decisive moon sighting falls on the 29th evening of each Hijri month. Hilal Vision shows the predicted visibility for upcoming Ramadan and Eid crescents on the global visibility map, so you can see where on Earth the crescent is expected to be sighted first.
Why do different countries sight the moon on different days?
The crescent sets at different times around the globe and is only visible where it is high and bright enough above the horizon at sunset. Because of this, plus differing juristic rules on whether one sighting binds the whole world (matla), countries can legitimately begin a month a day apart.
Can the new crescent moon be sighted with the naked eye?
Often yes, but only when the crescent is far enough from the sun. Below roughly 7 degrees of elongation (the Danjon limit) no crescent has ever been reliably sighted, even with a telescope. Hilal Vision flags which observation method — naked eye, binoculars, or telescope — each location is likely to need.
